Fire Project Rough Draft "Food Deserts"
Today's world is made of various people, communities, different perspectives just to about everything in the world. But what has been a difficult issue to tackle and be taken to consideration has been food desert; people are not disposed to healthy food in their community. Food desert have affected many people in many ways, due to the urban planning in the communities, poverty, and the fast food corporations have been the cause of peoples health issues in the community.
Urban planning is the branch of architecture dealing with the design and organization of urban space and activities. Chicago has been divided and constructed in forms the people have not realize where they stand and their label in the world. The windy city is known for its segregation, for having a hierarchy in society, keeping the poor and rich apart, how? by the work one is allowed to have, the amount of knowledge a degree speaks. People who live in disadvantaged communities are most likely to have worse health issues. George A. Kaplan conducted a study in location of community and disadvantages:
After nine years, we discovered that those who live in this poverty area had a 71% greater chance of dying during that period than those who lived in other parts of oakland. Of course, the two groups of people differed in many ways, but when we took into account differences in income and education, health care access, race/ethnicity, smoking and other high risk behaviors, depression, and other factors by which they differed, those in the poverty are were still 50% more likely to die during those nine years! (George A. Kaplan, Ph.D.)
This reading has already presented that those people in these issues, the poverty line, the communities placed in plays a role in the person's health. Many Communities have already have to deal with the fact that there are factories that are obviously not good for the people but are placed in these communities because they are "low-income" communities where little kids and people fall into serious health issues. Now it is impossible to get a reach of healthy foods, specially with the amount people get for a job. Some people/families don't have a stable job. The stores are miles from people's home, while the fast food restaurants are around the corner. Healthy stores in communities that are low-income have to travel 10 miles, but there are some people who do not have a way to get there. To face the truth, there are many homeless people in the community, living of 1$ a day and that one dollar is spent a small meal that will only mess their health more, and possibly lead to death. If the healthy food, no chemicals added whereas cheap as fast food, more than half the people now would be as healthy as they could with low prices. The balance between healthy stores and fast food stores is incredibly uneven swinging too far side on fast food. In the studies conducted, the research had proven to show that certain people have access to a limited of foods.
The fast food corporations make their great-es profit from these low income communities. Where it is made sure that the healthy food are a longer distance than the fast food restaurants that are around the corner. Researches have proven that in Chicago neighborhood in the south are more likely to have fast food chain stores around each peoples homes. The reading states, "Whether measured by income, education, or occupation, socioeconomic status (SES) is a strong predictor of health outcomes and health variations among racial groups (Marmot, 2005, William and Jackson, 2005) If the people lack knowledge to what they are limited to their community. They will not make the society any better, if people are limited to what they have in the community and can't go beyond the communities line is because they do not have transportation. This is how the fast food gets their biggest profit from. The amount of money a household makes in a week, months, a year may not be enough for many to get the healthiest of foods. The only access to food they have is the corporations that keep prices incredibly low in order to keep these people coming back, where people lack knowledge of how the corporations use the community as their benefit. The socioeconomic status is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individual. Not many people have had a chance to experience and have the same luck as many people in their community. The experiences vary within every individual, and depending where they have been capable of working of gaining skills and experiences determines their endings in where they work. Many do not get this chance, due in connection to lack of knowledge. Today's society is all based on a paper that said you are a graduate, you have gone to school and finished ones education. Many industries, corporations do not allow people without a degree because they believe everything is earned in school. These corporations know how to play the games in the economy, society and peoples minds. Giving a little extra in their sales to advertise and make sure you come back.
Poverty is everywhere, except rarely seen in labeled high-income communities, the north side communities. The low-income community is a place where more of the community is made of people who fall on the poverty line. The healthy foods are way off line for these people that can barely make ends meet. The stores and people tout about the good within the food and fruits but how can they be protagonist in a community that are not capable of reaching these kinds of foods.
